What is an IP Rating?

An IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, is a measure of how well an LED product is protected from dust, moisture, and other environmental factors. The rating is made up of two digits: the first indicates resistance to solid particles (like dust), and the second measures resistance to water.

For example, an LED light with an IP65 rating means it is completely dust-tight and can withstand water jets from any direction. This level of protection ensures that your lighting remains flawless, no matter the environment—whether it’s the cozy corners of your living room or the most exposed outdoor spaces.

First digit: Mr. Number one

The IP rating consists of two digits. Each digit gives you a clear understanding of the level of protection the product offers. The first number indicates the protection against solid particles like dust and dirt.

0: No protection.

1: Protection from objects larger than 50mm (like a hand).

2: Protection from objects larger than 12.5mm (like fingers).

3: Protection from objects larger than 2.5mm (like tools and wires).

4: Protection from objects larger than 1mm (like small wires).

5: Dust-protected (some dust may enter, but it won’t interfere with operation).

6: Dust-tight (no dust will enter).

Second digit: Mr. Number two

This number indicates the protection against moisture, like rain or water splashes.

0: No protection.

1: Protection from vertically falling drops of water.

2: Protection from water drops falling at an angle of up to 15°.

3: Protection from spraying water.

4: Protection from splashing water.

5: Protection from water jets.

6: Protection from powerful water jets.

7: Protection from immersion in water up to 1 meter.

8: Protection from immersion in water beyond 1 meter.

For example, an IP65 rating means:

  • 6: Dust-tight – no dust can enter.
  • 5: Protection from water jets – it can withstand water splashes and jets without damage.

This detailed protection ensures that your LED lights are both reliable and durable, offering peace of mind in both indoor and outdoor settings. Whether it’s a bright living space or an outdoor garden, the quality of your lighting remains uncompromised.
